Emergency

This page is for a machine that is dangerous right now. If nobody is in danger and nothing is damaged, the last section is the one you want.

Gas, fire, smoke, sparks, or a carbon monoxide alarm

Get everyone out of the building first. Then call 911 from outside.

We rent out washers and dryers. We are not an emergency service and we cannot reach you as fast as they can. Call them first and call us second.

Outside office hours, leave a message with your address, your phone number and what the machine is doing.

Do not wait for us to call back before you turn off the water, the power or the gas.

Stop using the machine and open the one that matches

I smell gas

Leave the building now. Take everyone and any pets with you.

  1. Do not touch a light switch, do not unplug anything, and do not use a lighter or a match. A spark is the danger, not the smell.
  2. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility.
  3. Call us after that.
  4. Do not go back inside until the fire department or the gas utility says it is safe.

I see fire, smoke or sparks

Get everyone out and close the door behind you.

  1. Call 911 from outside.
  2. Do not open a machine that is smoking. Opening it gives the fire air.
  3. Call us after that.

A carbon monoxide alarm is sounding

Get everyone outside into fresh air now.

  1. Call 911 from outside.
  2. Do not go back inside to open windows or to find the alarm.
  3. Call us after that, and tell us you have a gas dryer if you do.

Water is running onto the floor

Turn off the two water valves on the wall behind the washer. Turn each one clockwise until it stops.

  1. If water has reached an outlet, a cord, or the machine itself, do not touch any of them. Switch off that machine's breaker instead, and only if you can stand somewhere dry to do it.
  2. Stop using the machine and do not start another cycle to drain it.
  3. Call us now.
  4. If water is going through to a floor below you, tell whoever lives there, and tell your landlord.

I smell burning, or I felt a shock, or it is buzzing

Do not touch the machine.

  1. Switch off its breaker, if you can reach the panel safely. Do not reach behind the machine for the plug.
  2. If anyone has been hurt, or you can see smoke, call 911 first.
  3. Call us after that.

It is walking or banging across the floor

Stop the machine and do not start it again.

  1. Turn off the two water valves behind it.
  2. Unplug it only if the plug is dry and you can reach it without leaning across the machine. Otherwise use the breaker.
  3. Call us. A machine that walks is not level or not loaded evenly, and it can pull its own hoses off.

The three shutoffs

Find these once, while nothing is wrong. Thirty seconds now is the difference between a puddle and a ceiling.

Water

Two valves on the wall behind the washer, one for hot and one for cold. Round handles turn clockwise until they stop. A single lever is off when it sits across the pipe rather than along it.

Power

The plug behind the machine, and the breaker for it in your panel. Use the breaker if there is any water near the machine, near its cord, or on the floor you would be standing on.

Gas

Gas dryers only. A valve on the pipe behind the dryer, off when the handle sits across the pipe. If you can smell gas, do not touch it. Leave the building and call 911 from outside.

Not an emergency

A machine that will not start, a noise that is only a noise, or a door that will not latch is a repair, not an emergency. Those are read during office hours.
